Scout Update 19 Oct

E-mail Print PDF
I'm going to start this update with some well-deserved thanks. Almost the whole Troop came to the Hard Core camp in September and it was great fun. However, if it hadn't been for some of our parents helping out, we'd have really struggled. So, our thanks go to Nigel (aka Dave Burrows) for driving the gear there and back in his van, Martin Thornley for borrowing a trailer and bringing over the pioneering poles for the bivvies, and Richard Walton for all his help over the weekend. You're all top fellas!

Thanks also go to George Walton for taking on extra responsibility and using all his skills to be a real help. Saying that, all the Scouts were excellent and we couldn't fault any of them. We were wondering how they'd take to a more 'back-to-basics' type of weekend, and they seemed to really like it. We think that's great, as we intend to do a lot more of that kind of thing in future.

Meeting Wednesday 20th October

Yes, it's almost Halloween and that means carving pumpkins... doesn't it? This Wednesday, your son/daughter will need to bring a small knife for carving, but rest assured that the evening's going to have a 2nd Otley twist to it.

Welcome to the Scubs!

We'd like to welcome Jack, James & Magnus to the Troop. They've had a couple of evenings with us now, and apart from Jack throwing himself down a 7ft drop, they seem to be settling in well.

Expedition Challenge

The more experienced Scouts are working towards this at the moment – Adam, Charlotte, Eva, George, Joseph & Lewis. Sorry we didn't work on it last week – we thought it'd be more fun for the French exchange students to go up the Chevin. We're planning a weekend away – they need to look at the attached description of the challenge and see how their ideas would meet the requirements and be affordable. Some of the plans sounded like great fun!

Dress code

We're not strict about uniform at 2nd Otley, but we need Scouts to stick to a couple of basics. It's trousers, not skirts, and they have to be sufficiently loose for a shirt to be tucked in with a semblance of decency. Also, some Scouts often turn up in shoes that aren't safe to run in. Like, when are we not going to be running around?

Meeting dates & times

There's no meeting on 27th October because of half term. We start up again on 3rd November – 7.30 – 9pm.

As ever, if you have any questions, just ask.

Cheers,
