What we've just done and what is coming up.
Hardcore camp September 2014
Following the success of Hardcore camp where 18 Scouts cooked for themselves on open fires, built shelters and slept in them or even under the stars. We are giving ourselves little time to reminisce before looking forward to our next events.
Ice bucket challenge 8th October 2014
We have been challenged by Otley Parish church to do the Ice bucket challenge, please watch their efforts here. Please come to scouts in clothes you don't mind getting wet, with £2 (donation to MND) a towel, a bucket and a change of clothes including your Scout uniform.
Climbing Pen-y-Ghent Saturday 22nd November 2014
We are fortunate enough to have an experienced mountain climber as one of our leaders, so it seems a waste not to use his skills. We will be doing a day trip leaving from the Scout hut in the morning returning in the late afternoon/ early evening. Further details coming soon.
Wintercamp 9-11 January 2015
This has a final booking date at the start of November so start thinking about if you want to go. I will price it up over the next couple of weeks but it will be around £70.

As mentioned at last week's Cub meeting, Cub football is set to make it's long awaited return this Saturday. We will be holding a practice match at Garnett's Field. Meet at 9am with boots and shin pads - there's no kit requirements this week.
We will aim to finish around 9:50am.
For Cubs who haven't yet had a go at Cub football, Saturday is an ideal opportunity to come along and have a go. We begin fixtures against other Cub Packs the following Saturday and have 8 matches between now and Christmas.
After the success of the pre-season warm up last year, we are likely to need to form another wanders team or parents and frankly anyone who can kick a ball (no minimum skill level!) so please come prepared to get stuck into part of the session on Saturday if you're able.
If you have any questions about Cub football, please drop me a line or catch me after Cubs this evening.

Here is an update on our upcoming weekends away.
Hardcore camp 26th - 28th September 2014
Camp is here! And as the name suggests we will be burning things, cutting things down, building things up and sleeping in them. The cost for the camp will be £35 for the weekend. The permission form will follow in the coming days. We will be asking for help with lifts for both the Friday evening and the Sunday afternoon, if you are willing and able, please let me know.

We attended this event at Gilwell Park just outside London 2 years ago and it was a fantastic event, we will be going to the other hosting National Scouting Activity Centre at Hawkhirst, on the banks of the Kielder Reservoir in Northumberland. The cost of this event will be around £70 and for further information please click on the link Wintercamp
BIG Camp 1st - 4th May 2015

Here is an update of what is going on in Scouts at the moment.
Scout information forms
In trying to keep emergency contact details and medical conditions up to date I recently sent out request for all Scouts to fill in and return an information form. Very few have been returned, could you please fill in the attached and return it to me either at Scouts or by email if you have not done so.
Carnival 21st June 2014
Every year Scout groups and other voluntary organisations take part in the Otley Carnival, to raise funds for good causes and generally have a good time whilst competing to win the best float in their class. This year is no exception, we are meeting up on the Saturday morning at 10:30am, please bring your bikes and your cycle helmets. We are not having a lorry this year, but a rolling float celebrating the grand depart coming through Otley. If Scouts could wear blue bottom half and a green top half (Scout shirts are ideal) and their neckars. Please bring a packed lunch.
Danefield meeting Wed 25th June 2014
We are meeting and picking up from Danefield Car park (up East Chevin Road away from Otley, first car park on the left) please lift share where you can.
Otley cycle races and Grand Depart 2nd July 2014
If you like cycling this week will be heavenly! Otley Cycle races are on the Wednesday and the Tour de France is rolling through Otley on the Saturday. To allow people to get their fix on the cycling bug this week we will going for a ride on the Tuesday evening (1st July 2014). We will be asking the scouts if they want to go on road or off.
We have gone through all the areas the Scouts will need to run an overnight expedition this summer. All we want now are some small groups of Scouts (between 4 and 7), we will be asking in meetings but we need Scouts to step up and take on an expedition.
Final meeting of the summer 16th July 2014
We would like to invite the parents to a Scout meeting and see what we do, have a go if you're game and have a bite to eat. I will confirm the location nearer the time.
Finally, dates for the future...
To help you plan ahead, the next camp will be 27th-29th September 2014. We have shortlisted a few locations but will consult with the Scouts, the kind of camp they want to do.
Any questions, just ask.

After announcing a change of meeting night with England's World Cup match on Thursday, a number of parents have been in touch to let us know that Monday evenings are not convenient for an alternative evening.
Instead, we will be meeting on Thursday but with changed times - meeting at 6:30pm and finishing at 7:45 prompt to allow everyone to get home in time to watch the England match.
Apologies for any confusion and inconvience caused.
2nd Otley Scout Group will be taking part in this year's Otley Carnival but with a slight twist - instead of the usual float on the back of a lorry, we will instead be gathering on our bikes to create 2nd Otley's very own "Le Grande Arrive" - a gathering of out Scout Group's members on yellow bikes, wearing 2nd Otley colours and a few French touches thrown in for good measure. Details about the event are below:
When: Saturday 21st June
What time: Meet at the Scout building at 10:30am to decorate bikes ready for the Carnival
What do Cubs need: Their bikes, a cycling helmet (compulsory - any Cubs without one won't be able to cycle with us) and the correct clothing.
Clothing: green top halves (inside out jerseys will work), blue bottom half (trousers or shorts) - to replicate 2nd Otley colours of our neckers and the neckers themselves
Other outfits: We are also going to have a yellow jersey, a polka dot jersey and a white jersey. If you child had one of these tops that they can wear, please let me know. If more than one Cub wishes to wear these colours, we'll have a draw to decide.
Carnival event: Judging of all entries takes place on the Cattle Mart car park around 12 noon. Everyone will need to be in position at this point ready. The floats depart to make their way through the town around 1pm, heading to the Carnival field next to the river, sometime around 1:45-2pm.
Other things needed: If your child is around from 10:30am, they will probably need to have lunch with them.
Help: We don't have a huge number of leaders available so need parents to help get bikes ready (we're using yellow plastic covering so no damage to bikes) and then to get everyone across to the Cattle Mart car park.
We'd like to have a really large 2nd Otley contingent (peleton!) so please do all you can to encourage your child to take part in this event.
Any questions, offers of help, details of jerseys (yellow, polka dot, white), please let me know.
