Next week’s cub meeting will be...
And we’d like you to bring some rubbish into cubs with you.
Please can you collect and bring in any recyclable materials that you might find around the house. Things like cereal boxes, loo roll tubes, milk cartons, yogurt pots, etc. If they've contained food please give them a wash. No metal, glass or sharp edges please.
Bring as many items as you can because one of the things we’ll be using them for is junk modeling.
See you on Thursday

This is just a quick update with some dates to put in your diaries. I need you to let me know two things – is your Explorer taking part in the bouldering competition Sun 2nd March and are they coming on the Expedition Sat 15th – Sun 15th March?
Sunday 2nd March: Explorers Bouldering competition - £5 to take part
There’s a regional (West Yorkshire) Bouldering competition happening next weekend and the Explorers have said that they’re up to it. We need to enter a team of six to take part – can you let me know if your Explorer wants to come and has availability? It’s at an indoor wall near Keighley and all lifts are provided. We want to book a 1400-1600 slot, but may have to book a morning one depending on availability. Further details at http://www.wyscouts.org.uk/events/bouldering-competition/. Let me know if your Explorer wants to take part.
Sat 15th March – Sun 16th March: overnight expedition
Our newest Explorers – George, Ali & Ben K – have to take part in an overnight expedition to get their Scouts Gold Award, (full details of the Scouts Expedition Challenge at http://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/2664/expedition-challenge - Area 1 - Expedition), so we’re planning a trip based around Pateley Bridge. We’re hoping to stay at the Pateley Bridge Scout hut, if they ever answer their emails… However, we’re definitely planning to traipse through Brimham Rocks, which is always fun. We need to firm up the accommodation before we can price up the weekend, but it’s going to be really, really cheap.
It should be a laugh, as well as preparing the Explorers for their DoE expeditions, as we’re well aware that their independent navigation skills need some polishing! We’re had a lot of interest but need to know who’s coming on the trip, now we’ve got a definite date.
Apex 2014 – cancelled
Unfortunately for everyone who was looking forward to the April and October Apex events, they’ve been cancelled due to the work commitments of the (voluntary) organisers.
The forms and cheques have been sent off to our regional Scouts DofE contact, so you should shortly be receiving log-in details to update your Explorer’s progress on-line. I haven’t got them back for everybody – the sooner you register, the sooner they can get started! More about the scheme at https://www.dofe.org/.
We’re considering moving meetings to Monday, as this would mean that we don’t have to share the hall with the Cubs. It’s also the day that other Wharfedale Explorers meet, so we’d have more opportunities for joint meetings or challenges. However, a couple of our Explorers have timetable clashes. Until further notice, we’re still meeting on Thursdays 1930 – 2100 unless notified otherwise.
- Thurs 27/2/14 Sledge-building (there will be snow, there will be snow!)
- Sun 2/3/14 Explorers bouldering competition
- Thurs 6/3/14 Expedition-planning meeting (if your Explorer isn’t coming on the Expedition, then we suggest that they don’t attend this meeting)
- Mon 10/3/14 Possible joint meeting with Parish Explorers – watch this space
- Thurs 13/3/14 No meeting, as it’s Expedition weekend
- Sat 15 & Sun 16/3/14 Expedition around Pateley Bridge
- Thurs 20/3/14 Meetings back to normal times & dates
Looking further ahead…
- Thurs 10/4/14 No meeting – Easter holidays
- Thurs 17/4/14 No meeting – Easter holidays
- Sun 27/4/14 St George’s Day Parade
- Fri 9/5/14 Torch Race – Explorers race in teams of 6, not 10 like in Scouts, so let’s hope they’ve trained well!
- Sat 21/6/14 Otley Carnival
- Fri 27/6/14 Prince Henry’s teacher training day – possibility of a long weekend away
As both there’s Year 10 exams and GCSE’s going on in May (Prince Henry’s Year 10 exams start Thurs 6/5/14), we’re intending to keep on meeting that month, but will probably make meetings shorter and sillier, to give them all the chance to run around, de-stress and blow off a bit of steam. After all, all work and no play… ;-)
Hope that helps you to plan your diaries – any questions, drop me a line.

It has been a great week for 2nd Otley as they swept the board and won both the District Cub and District Scout Quiz.
Last week our Clever Cubs regained the trophy that they won in 2012, but narrowly lost in 2013. They managed this with a fantastic 85% accuracy in their answers
Following up that tremendous result, our Smart Scouts won their quiz last night by a comfortable 4 point margin.
Well done to all those cubs and scouts who took part.

Tough quiz tests Wharfedale Cubs’ knowledge of Scouting
10:00am Sunday 23rd February 2014 in News
The annual Wharfedale Cubs district quiz took place at Curly Hill campsite in Ilkley.
A total of nine groups took part in ten rounds of questions ranging from sports and scouting to spelling and general knowledge.
There was even a round where the Cubs had to identify a sound. After a close finish, the winning group was the 2nd Otley Cubs.
Many thanks to the Wharfedale Service Team for organising the event.

I’m happy to be writing to you all as an Explorers leader. Rich Fishburn has had to step down due to personal commitments and Trevor is already stretched with his commitments to the Cubs and wider group, so I’ve switched section to support Jill and to have some fun with the older ones!
From talking to Explorers and some of the parents, this is what they’ve told me:
