I’m happy to be writing to you all as an Explorers leader. Rich Fishburn has had to step down due to personal commitments and Trevor is already stretched with his commitments to the Cubs and wider group, so I’ve switched section to support Jill and to have some fun with the older ones!
From talking to Explorers and some of the parents, this is what they’ve told me.
- You’d prefer weekly meetings to fortnightly ones.
- Outrageous construction projects are a good thing – how about some pedal-powered armchairs or some radical pioneering for when the Tour de France comes through in July? (Nick – do you realise that your son has volunteered you for a bicycle milkshake-maker project?)
- They’re up for some big days out in the Lakes.
- Explorers would rather we communicate with parents than directly with them (they say parents are better at remembering) and they’d prefer a Facebook group to Twitter when it comes to sharing photos and event information.
I’ve just had a chunk of my time freed up, as Stu has moved off shifts, so am planning to put some work into organising events and activities. As you’ll remember from Scouts, I hate doing things last-minute, so will be giving you good advance notice of events once I’m up and running. Expect some housekeeping emails to follow over the next few weeks. But as for now…
Invitation to come to Hag Dyke Scout camp this weekend – Fri 8th – Sun 10th November
As your Explorer has hopefully told you, there’s a Scout camp running at Hag Dyke this weekend. Having finalised the Scout numbers, we can confirm that we’ve got room for the Explorers to come along too if they’re up for it. This excellent site can only be reached by walking or four-wheel drive and is an old, stone farmhouse nestled just below the Greater Whernside plateau in the Dales, above Kettlewell. The cost of the weekend is £49 for accommodation, food and transport, and we can promise that there will be plenty of yomping about in the dark and spooky goings on. The cost of the weekend is £49 – a £25 deposit and we’re happy to take the other £24 at any time in the next month if it would help to split the payment.
I’ll have a call round tomorrow to see who’s interested in a Hag Dyke adventure, so we can finalise the food order.
No meeting this Thursday (because of camp preparation), but meetings will be weekly from Thursday 14th November onwards. I would prefer to meet and finish earlier, rather than later, and would welcome some parental feedback on what meeting start time suits you. I was thinking 7 – 9pm?
Orchard planting, Saturday 16th November 10am - midday
When we needed help with fundraising and decorating the Scout hut, Otley Chevin Rotary Club donated over £5,000 and sent in a team of volunteers. So now it’s our turn to lend a hand. They’ve asked for our help in planting over 400 trees on the Chevin – all you need is a spade and some enthusiasm. Teenagers love getting up bright and early on a weekend morning, so we’ll be encouraging our Explorers to come along and parents would be most welcome too. Leave a legacy in your locality!
The 2nd Otley Gang Show Extravaganza, Saturday 23rd November 2013 – 2.30pm & 7pm
Performing marvels from all sections of 2nd Otley. Dress rehearsal for participants 6.30pm Thursday 21st November.
So, to summarise, here’s what we’ve got on in November.
- Thursday 7th – no meeting
- Friday 8th – Sunday 10th – Hag Dyke camp
- Thursday 14th – Explorers meeting (7 – 9pm unless I get feedback that’s a bad time for people)
- Saturday 16th – Chevin orchard tree planting 10am – midday
- Thursday 21st – Gang Show dress rehearsal at 6.30pm
- Saturday 23rd – Gang Show @ 2.30pm & 7pm
- Thursday 28th – Explorers meeting (7 – 9pm)
That’s plenty enough for now! Any questions, please drop me a line.

With the new school year starting, I thought it might be useful to send you information about Cubs over the coming term.
On Thursday 5th September at 6:45pm. We will continue to finish at 8:30pm during September to make the most of the light nights while they last.
To continue 2nd Otley's Centenary celebrations, we will be holding a Gang Show on Saturday 23rd November and we hope all Cubs will be involved. More details about how to get involved will be provided to Cubs during this term.
2nd Otley's Cub football team were very successful last season, winning the Spring Trophy, 5 A Side tournament and joint winners of the league. Cub football provides a great opportunity for Cubs with an interest in playing football to get involved in a team without needing to play for another club. We play 8 a side and make sure all Cubs who attend matches get to play each match, using rolling substitutions to help this along.
The league resumes in September with 10 matches to be played before Christmas.

As part of our Scout Group's Centenary celebrations we will be staging a Centenary Gang Show at our Scout HQ on Saturday 23rd November.
A gang show is a theatrical performance. It aims to give young people in Scouting the opportunity to develop performance skills whilst building confidence through fun. Opportunities are also afforded to work backstage and front of house or as musicians.
